Types of Servers online: Definition and Details

There are various types of server that perform seperate functions from each other. Various networks include individual or added of the common types of server :

What is Server?

A computer or a system is considered as a server when it shares data, resources, services, or programmes to other computers within a network. In a theoretical way, whenever a laptop shares resources with other computers, that is called a server. There are varieties in the servers. Those can be web servers, mail servers, virtual servers, and so on.

The types of server can be a server and a client at the same time. That means a system can take the resources from one computer and share it with another at the same time.

How different all types of server work?

To work as a server, a computer must have the capability to listen to the requests that its client says on a network connection. This function of listening to the request of clients can be a part of the operating system or can be an installed application or a combination of the two.

Whenever a client requires data or resources from a server; it sends the request to its server. Then the servers have to receive the request and respond to it with the exact information that the client needs. This model is named Client-server networking, also called a call response model.

A server not only receives the request and provides exact information, but also it has some additional tasks that it follows. It can be identifying the client’s validity, its request and ensuring that the client has access to the data and resources it has requested and so many more.

That’s why the server needs to be able to decide the request correctly. Because the wrong read of a claim can lead to the misinformation that the client will get. A server should be capable enough to listen to a request, decide it, identify the sender’s validity, the data it has asked for, and then only provide the client with accurate information.

Different types of server :

There are different types of serves, and they provide various functions. A network can contain one or more types of servers at one time.

File servers:

As the name suggests, this file server stores and distributes files among its clients. It is a shared server. That means multiple users or clients can use and share the same files stored over this server. File server software is designed in a way to improve the speed of reading and writing with the server to improvise the performance of the server.

Print servers:

Again, likewise the name; print servers allow the clients for the management and distribution of printing functionality. This server can respond to requests from different workstations. So rather than establishing one server at each workstation, one print server can handle multiple workstations.

Application Servers:

These types of server run applications. So it runs resource-intensive applications. If multiple users share the application, the application needs to be run by a server. As only one server can access so many applications, there is no need to install and maintain them individually.

Mail servers:

It is one type of application server. It receives the emails sent to a user and stores them until another client requests the same mail on behalf of the former user. A mail server allows a single machine to be correctly configured and attached to the network all the time. So it will save time and can keep track of work efficiently.

Conclusion:

Servers are essential to keep the work on track and do those efficiently than ever. So if you want to maximize your performance, it is better to have different kinds of servers as per your work. Pick the types of the server which suits your platform very well.
