They are used to pump water from wells to boost pressure in domestic water intake lines. They can provide a continuous water pressure source for firefighting systems and can be used as sump pumps in either horizontal or vertical configurations.

The main drawback of these pumps is that they require small clearance between the outer edge and the rotating pump. This results in very low-speed rotations. If positive displacement pumps are operated at high speeds, the liquid can erode and reduce the efficiency of the pump.
