Methods To Control Lip Infection

When it comes to beauty everyone becomes a bit conscious. It is because beauty attracts people and leaves an everlasting impression. Beauty can never be forgotten once caught in the eyes of the holder. External beauty is identified by the features and complexion one possesses. Although one can have nice features, their maintenance is of utmost importance. If the health of a person is good, it will automatically reflect on the face. If the immunity of an individual is low and has bad health it will show up in the face. One of the catchy features of a person’s face is his lips. Pink and plump lips are the centre of attraction for an individual. But lips can go black, dry, and infected if nutrition is improper or some bacteria or fungus has invaded the immune system. There are many types of lip infections that can occur due to different reasons. Some of the lip infection types are mentioned below:

  • Angular cheilitis- It is a type of inflammation that occurs at one or both corners of the lips. The saliva that collects at the edges contains a lot of micro-organisms that can cause the infection. There is a formation of cracks at the point of collection of saliva containing bacteria. 
  • Cold sores- These are fluid-filled blisters that form on lips or mouth. They are red and cracked pimples on the lips. The causative agent of cold sores is the herpes simplex virus.
  • Allergic contact dermatitis- It is an allergic sore which can occur anywhere on the body including lips due to contact with some allergy-causing agent like fragrance, cream, dust, etc. An allergy occurs 48-78 hours after contact with an allergen. There is a hypersensitivity reaction that leads to the formation of sores on lips or anywhere in the body. 

Causes of lip infection:

  • Improper oral hygiene 
  • Ill fitted braces or dentures
  • Contact with an infected person
  • Vitamin B12 deficiency
  • Collection of bacterial saliva in the mouth for longer periods
  • Nutritional deficiency
  • Smoking

Treatment of lip infection:

Many lip infection creams can be applied to controlling the spread of disease. Some of them are as follows:

  • Ointments containing phenols should be used to control cracking of lips and its further spread. 
  • Creams that have numbing agents like acyclovir can be applied to the affected area. This helps to reduce pain at the same time. 
  • Ketoconazole is an antiviral drug similar to itraconazole, fluconazole group which helps to subside fungal infections of lips. 

Prevention of lip infection:

  • Good oral health should be maintained. This helps to prevent the infection in the first place.
  • Braces or dentures should properly fit the jaws. Loose or tight fitted oral dentures and braces can lead to lip and mouth infections.
  • Nutrition rich diet should be consumed daily. This reduces the chances of recurrence of lip and mouth diseases. It is because sores are mostly caused by folate deficiency. 
  • Smoking should be stopped as soon as any lip infection arises. This is because it can worsen the condition. 

If an infection has occurred prefer lip infection creams which help in controlling them.
